Not A (Typical) Pageant Girl

I'm a 25 year old actress in West Texas, with no pageant experience, and I'm planning to compete in the Miss Texas USA pageant this fall!

Thanks for the support.

Miss Ector County, 2009.

Updates

Sorry I haven’t updated in ages. I was googling Miss Texas Something or Other U.S.A. when I stumbled on another current, semi local, same topic blog. and the thought of other current contestants reading detailed posts of my progress gave me a a strange feeling, so I stopped.

I have slowly been increasing my work outs and eating much better/Greener! This week I hope to attend a class at the Y everyday. I had my first Power Cuts class yesterday and it was tough. Weight, weights, crunches, steps and more weights. The class meets twice a week and if I attend regularly it should be a big help. I also have my kick boxing, Pilate’s and yoga classes, so I’m doing ok. For a beginner.

A friend of mine did a great job on my headshot and sponsor thank you ad. And yesterday I had the headshotprinted. I am almost ready to send off my final package to the pageant, I just need to finish filling out the many pages of questionnaires.

This past weekend I was in Dallas, I had my first fitting for evening gown alterations and picked up a few more things I need.

I’m a little worried about finding a good swim suit. I want to go yellow with a lot of support.

I’m still keeping an eye out for the pieces I need for my interview outfit but I have a pretty good idea what I am looking for.

Things are slowly starting to come together.

I am trying to remember to enjoy the process as it is happening, but I am constantly fighting the wish that it were already over, the experience gained, and the next adventure begun. Then I say to myself “This is life. This is learning. This is fun. Stop wishing it were over!”

It is fun. I haven’t worked this hard to be a better, healthier, more informed me in a long time, if ever. I feel very goal oriented. I’ve been gradually eliminating distractions and negative influences. I almost feel like I’m being a little selfish, but I’m happy and I’m growing.

The other fun, much less serious, and much more girly, nice thing about the pageant is that I get to doll up to the nines. I get to plan and primp over every detail, nails, hair, tan, jewelry, and dress without finding a prom date or worrying if I’m ready to be a bride. It’s great having an excuse to play dress up!

Namaste

Yesterday, I had my first yoga class at the YMCA. Today, I am sore.

The good? The yoga is effective. The bad? If beginners yoga kicked my butt, I have a long way to go till I’m “fit.”

I really enjoyed the yoga class. I wish they offered more than one class a week at a time that I can attend (not between 8 & 5.) The instructor, Wendy, was wonderful and cheerful! She recognized me from theatre, which was fun, and was immediately welcoming to everyone that came to the class. The verdict is in, I’m joining the Y!

Today

I picked up my first sponsor check! The check was for $500 and is going to be a huge help.

Thank you, Jim Milson & Sun Electric!

It’s fun to stay at the Y. M. C. A…

I worked out last night at the YMCA on a three day pass, I plan on joining soon and I’m trying it out first to make sure I like it. I loved the cardio room with it’s cardiovision, small TVs at every station. Excited to try the Yoga class on Wednesday night. I haven’t had a yoga class since college.

A note on my fitness. I started running in January, several months before I knew about the pageant. I was in terrible shape so it’s a good thing I started a little early. I have never been a runner prior and I’ve come to really enjoy it, though I could use a little training. It’s too hot to run outside anymore so I’m hoping to alternate the elliptical and treadmill at the Y, maybe even add in some weights soon.  Also, this Friday I have Relay for Life, lots of walking, and in two weeks I’m going on an over night backpacking trip!

I wish I had a good way to chart my fitness progress and share it with you all. I’ll try to come up with something.

I have a potential full sponsor!

Someone has offered to sponsor me and we have a meeting on Monday. I don’t know how much he is considering donating but I am working up a Pageant Expense sheet so as to give him an idea how expensive the pageant is.

Please…

Keep your fingers crossed!
